Review of Cheryl B. Engelhardt’s New Single: Unwind
Well, this is a bit of a shocker! Cheryl was so subtle and soft in her album, Luminary, that to imagine the fire and bare truth told in plain terms could shake your image of a new age musician. But this is the real power of art! To make and unmake–our ideas, our conceptions, our understanding of norms. Artists are given the chance to say things that may fall on dead ears otherwise but coalesced with art, the same message could bring in transformational effect.
“Unwind” is a goddess’s song. Blunt, unrestricted, and laced with truth. There is no bitterness but there is not vulnerability too. It tells you what it intends to.
The lyrics are poetically chosen to keep any snobbery at an arm’s length. You are welcome to be yourself, but there’s no room for judgement or opinion.
The song starts with the chorus humming and a beautiful rhythm before Cheryl delivers the punch. The undertones and overlapping effects make it such a mysterious treasure. There is so much belief in her voice–it feels she really owns it. There is no surprise that she has carried it like a champion given her training in classical music. To me, it galvanized her education, tutelage, countless practice hours, and obviously the passion that she has for her music.
She had already shown the power of experimentation through her previous album, but the dedication that she puts in her work and the variety that she is able to garner is astonishing. I wonder what she could not do with her musical prowess and the vision she has.
Absolutely brilliant and an eye-opener, truly.
I liked this line very much: “I am not lost just because you can’t find me.“
