The Elixir of Life Kindling The Human Consciousness
The phrase about water “ELIXIR of Life” has always impressed me profoundly. But for water, the earth would not have seen life on it. As the fourth element of nature, water is closely in contact with the earth permeating deep within, on its surface, and also in its atmosphere. This mysterious substance has made the earth what it is today.
‘Water’ has inspired an unfathomable number of themes and concepts in art, poetry, prose, and music. The theme of water has received an unconventional treatment in Kerani’s album ‘The Water of Life’. When we reread it as ‘The life (water) of life’, we start feeling the way water has inspired the composer. Looking from different angles, this is an exceptional kind of musical accomplishment resulting from the artist’s superior understanding of ‘Water’, its importance to life, and its relevance as a source of inspiration.

Experience
Water brings beings into life, and it sustains and backs life with its cleansing and healing powers. The water that supports life from within is the same water that permeates the earth in its different water bodies. Oceans, seas, and rivers have always evoked our sense of wonder and made us admire the beauty of nature more. The music in the album endeavors to make us visualize water as a life-sustaining force. In the process, water in turn inspires and recharges the consciousness of the listeners too.
1. The Water of Life
The first track narrates how powerful water is. As the mightiest water body, the ocean stands for expansiveness, constant activity, and never-ending robustness. The music in the track leads the audience on a journey into oceans stretching far and wide.
2. Healing Rain
Rain infuses life (water) into the sleeping seeds and wakes them to life. Rain is always admirable especially when it flows gently soothing the body and heart at once. The second track is a wonderful piece highlighting the healing power of rain.
3. Divine Immersion
The sound of water can also be a source of meditation and focus. The calmness and peace water is able to drive into our being helps cancel the distractions and channelize the mind on the object of meditation, which is skilfully conveyed through this track.
4. The Blue Wonder
As used in Dr. Frauke Bagusche’s book “Das Blaue Wunder”, the description of water by this name highlights the expansive quality of water. This track journeys the audience deep within the seas to marvel at the fascinating forms of life we can see underneath the surface of the ocean.
5. Sunset Lake
The ocean at sunset is a marvelous sight to enjoy. This concept has inspired the composer to talk of the theme of transition from day to night, activity to stillness, and settling with one’s deep consciousness.
6. Cascade
Waterfalls are one of the most mesmerizing and inspiring phenomena no one can miss getting inspired from. The sixth track is an epic kind of composition mimicking the feel of a massive waterfall. The power of water surfaces in the rendering and takes the listeners to awe.
7. The Fountain of Youth
This track is based on the mythological concept of the Fountain of Youth, which has the power to restore the youthfulness of those that take a dip in it. Such tales surround us from many traditions and cultures. Kerani has weaved one of her masterpieces in this track talking of resurgence in a profound language.
8. Ocean Tides
Ocean tides are fascinating phenomenon children and adults enjoy alike. Tides in the ocean result from the forces of the sun and moon and hence remind us of the deep connection we enjoy with the universe around us. The feeling you get out of listening to this track is something that we would have experienced on unfrequented beaches while watching captivating waves.
9. Crystalline
One of the most alluring tracks of this album, this piece of music approaches water from a scientific point of view. Water is the only element on the earth that you can see in three different states of existence namely solid, liquid and gas. The music is weaved so skilfully in this track to drive home this lofty subject in an impressive way.
10. The Water of Life
Conceived as the epilogue to the album, the final track is titled on the name of the album to suggest the completion of the journey the audience has had with the composer. The music in this track sounds very intimate reaching the depths of the consciousness and leaving the listeners with a sense of complete satisfaction that lingers long after listening to the album.
Take-Home
Conceived and weaved on a profound theme, this is one of the most exceptional kinds of compositions I have ever listened to. The meticulous work done by the composer surfaces her fine grasp of the subject and the dexterity with which she conveys it through her music.
