Album Review—Still On My Way by Beddy Lobalbo
A Review Of Beddy’s Worship Songs: An Invitation To Faith, Hope and Love For God
“Still On My Way” is an inspiring collection of worship songs that demonstrate a unique combination of different musical influences spanning over decades. For this album, Beddy seems to have drawn inspiration from an array of sources including Motown, the Beatles, Blues, Rockabilly, and Gospel. Beddy’s music is a fresh approach to worship music which she chooses to label as “Praise Pop.” How the artist has blended different genres in her music throughout the album is evident in these tracks.
The Artist
Beddy LoBalbo’s musical career started in her early years. Inspired by The Beatles, Motown, and British Invasion bands, Beddy took piano lessons when she was just five years old. Eventually, Beddy developed a deep appreciation for both classical composers and Top 40 hits. Even as she pursued an M.A. in English at SUNY Stony Brook and took up a career in speechwriting at IBM and medical massage therapy, her passion for music continued. She performed at Folk City in Greenwich Village and continued writing songs. Her debut CD, “Good Night, Little One,” was released in 2010.
Beddy is now a vibrant member of the Baby Boom generation. She is seen revitalizing her music career with the energetic release of some new songs, including “How About Now?” Her works embody a revolutionary spirit and enduring love for music, proving that there is no age for creativity and passion.
Listening Through The Tracks
The album opens with “There’s A Light,” a track inspired by Supremes and the Motown girl groups of the 60’s. Starting with an upbeat tone, the song combines joy and a deep sense of reverence, praising the almighty.
“The Circle Song” continues the prayerful journey, using the metaphor of a circle to illustrate how life is interconnected and highlight unity in faith. The circular structure of the song conveys the idea of wholeness and continuity in our spiritual journey. In this song, Beddy has skillfully used lyrics and music to convey profound concepts.
“I Can’t Wait to See Jesus” has been inspired by a scene on a Palm Sunday when a congregation member was dressed up as Jesus. The spirit of the song embodies anticipation and joy rather than fear of death. The tone is relaxed and uplifting demonstrating the artist’s ability to mix a serious theme with a sense of humor.
In “Even Jesus Got the Blues,” Beddy talks of the universal experience of sadness duly supported by the idea that even Jesus experienced the blues. To this song, Todd Caldwell has contributed on Hammond organ, Christine Chanel with vocals, and Sam Wagner on guitar.
“Meet Me in the Morning” once again inspires the celebration of worship. The joy pervading the whole song ably captures the essence of the joy of worshipping as a community and sharing spirituality with fellow worshippers.
In the track “The Kingdom of Heaven,” the album takes a sharp turn to highlight one of Gospel’s profound themes. The lyrics are soul-stirring and the music is uplifting and vibrant.
What the artist calls as her tribute to Steely Dan, “The Gift,” heralds the beautiful moments of our daily lives, which we frequently tend to overlook. The central themes in this song are the value of the present moment and celebrating the precious gifts of God.
In the track “Look Upon Me, Lord,” Beddy’s masterful spontaneity on the piano evidently comes to the surface. The song makes a plea for kindness and self-love, facilitating self-introspection for a moment.
“Mighty Love” is a unique composition that merges the gospel style and pop sensibility together in in its magical tunes. In the resulting expression, we witness the celebration of faith and spiritual exploration.
In the track, “The Faces of the Faithful” Beddy admires the devoted members of the congregation. The artist says this song is inspired by Mother Teresa’s view of seeing Jesus in the faces of the poor.
“God Makes A Way” gets in a joyful twist to the album with Christine Chanel’s spirited vocals ruling our hearts with a playful mood throughout. The concept highlights how God will intervene during the right time to help overcome obstacles and challenges.
Inspired by her friend’s battle with pancreatic cancer, the song “Save Me A Seat in Heaven,” is deeply emotional, exceptionally delivered by the masterly guitar work of Sam Wagner.
Concluding the album, “The Ones Who Choose Love” is a powerful anthem illustrating the unconditional nature of Christian love. It enjoins the listeners to imbibe the true essence of Christianity and affirms the power of love as the supreme principle in this universe.
